The Winchester Model of 1917 rifle marked with the “W” on the receiver is an early production variant. The first approximately 5,000 M1917 rifles manufactured by Winchester were marked in this manner. Rifles in this serial range were known to have been used in parts interchange tests and troop trials.
This is a collectible early production Winchester M1917 rifle chambered in 30-06. It features a 26-inch barrel, 6-round capacity, wing protected front sight, adjustable rear aperture sight, claw extractor, sling swivels, bayonet lug, parkerized finish, and walnut stock. Overall, this Winchester is in good vintage condition with normal age-related wear on the stock. Bore condition is excellent with a bright chamber and crisp rifling. The barrel was manufactured by Remington and features a flaming bomb proof with a 3-18 date. The receiver is marked "U.S." over "W" with a 4 digit serial number. The rear handguard ring, lower band, bolt handle, bolt release, safety, rear sight base, and butt plate all feature an "E" mark for Eddystone. The firing pin notch is marked "R" for Remington. The stock features 3GM-K and RA-P cartouches. An Eagle's head proof is visible on the bottom metal and butt plate. The receiver has a flaming bomb proof mark next to a circled star proof.
